A blog originally started to document our military years;
but now reclaimed to document our crazy but blessed civilian life...

Since Moving

As of my last post, we had just moved to our new town of Dahlonega, GA and we were getting settled into this new season and location. As much as we hated to leave the Savannah area (previous post HERE explains), we were thankful for a new season of refreshment and refocus.

The weeks before our move were insane. From Stan's job offer to his report date, we literally had 2 weeks to pack up and move. I don't think either of us stopped those two weeks, as we were busy getting our house ready to be on the rental market, finding a new house, packing boxes, etc. Amazingly throughout the moving process, I remained emotionally stable. I shed few tears and had little sad thoughts. I had a full plate and was too busy for those emotions to hit. But they would eventually arrive later. They just wouldn't hit for the reasons I thought...

On Valentine's Day, we departed and drove out of our driveway. Stan in the packed Uhaul, and me following in our SUV. As I glanced back at our house one final time, thoughts flooded my mind of all the memories shared in those 4 walls. The place we moved as a newlywed couple, starting our first years of marriage. The kitchen where I burned many meals, learning how to cook and be a wife. The living room where we sat on the floor, and ate our wedding cake on our 1st wedding anniversary. The front door, where Stan told me goodbye for a year while he left for Iraq, and I stayed behind. The bathroom, where we got ready for many military balls and special ceremonies. The mailbox, once decorated with balloons from sweet friends, when we brought our first baby home from the hospital. The dining room, where we ate many meals with some of the dearest friends. The backyard, where Stan planted a tree for our daughter, when she turned one month old. And the office, where Stan spent countless hours at his desk, doing what he loved the most- working for the dear church we loved. And just like that, we said goodbye. We said goodbye to all the memories there and started on a journey for a new set of new ones.

The drive up was a blur. I had a mix of emotions. I was so saddened with having to leave behind all of the above. But also anxious to get there and start unpacking. Because of our helpful families, we unpacked and moved into our new house in only a few hours. The following week went remarkably smooth. Stan reported on his first day, showing up at his Alma Mater campus, excited to meet the students he'd be teaching and fellow colleagues he'd instruct with. It was everything he had dreamed it would be. Being back on campus, walking the classroom halls, and teaching the cadets who are the future officers and leaders in the Army, gave him such a feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment. We visited a local church, and fell in love with its vision. I met a few neighbors and friends, and started to feel like things were falling into place.

I wish I could end the story there.

It was a Tuesday morning, and Stan called me to deliver the news. I cried for hours from the disappointment. I prayed and cried, asking God, "hadn't we been through enough? How could you let this happen?" Stan's job was ending in only a few weeks. Four weeks after Stan reported to the University of North Georgia, as a Senior Military Instructor, the sequester occurred and with it many changes took place. His contract position was a replacement for someone who was on orders to Afghanistan. The sequester caused many deployment orders to be stopped. That person's orders were ended and the university had to resupply that person's job, which put Stan out of his. It was a complicated situation, one that had never occurred at the school before, but it had a simple outcome- no job.

So there we were, having moved 5 hours to a new place, for the sole purpose of this job, and it would be over in 3 short weeks. I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around it. We were both devastated, and we weren't sure what was happening. We both battled an array of emotions. I couldn't talk about it without crying.  All the emotions that had stay intact while packing and moving, came full force. We were confused and started doubting everything. But in the end, we knew God was still in control. A friend reminded me that God doesn't have a plan B. He goes before us and prepares a way. There aren't any surprises to Him. And He is powerful enough to handle any situation, regardless of how impossible it may seem to us.

What seems impossible and confusing to us is a time when God can shine... Having spare time this spring from the job cut, Stan was able to complete his first semester of graduate school pursuing his MBA, and pulled all A's. I was able to work part-time hours, meeting new friends, while Ramsey attended a Christian preschool. Due to Stan pursuing his MBA, we got a GI Bill housing allowance (unknown to us), covering most of our housing expense. We got an awesome price from tenants for our home in Savannah, getting a large amount of extra a month to put towards savings. We received many unexpected funds that covered every need. I had the sweetest friends from back in Savannah, who provide me with encouragement and support, which was helpful on days when I needed it most. And, lastly, Stan starts his new job this coming week. He'll start a new path in the industrial world, supervising at a car manufacturing plant, using his business degree and a place where he can put to use his MBA he's earning. Plus, this plant is at the forefront of the car industry, giving him experience using the lean-maunfactoring system, making him desirable for a promotion to other car plants (if he desires), after only 2-3 years of experience.

Now that we are on the other side, I am at a much better place. I can see the bigger picture. I can see how God was faithful. Today, I am thankful for new seasons in life. I am thankful for each new day, and how it brings God's constant love. One day I will be able to see my whole life. I will see how God used it all (the good and bad) for good. What a great God we serve.

Stan's Return!

Having Stan home has been wonderful. The past few months seem like a blur. It seems like yesterday I was running around the house getting everything ready for his return. Now, here we are almost two months later and it seems as though he never left.

Below are pictures of the day he returned:

All smiles! So happy to be together!
Stan's family & church friends were at the ceremony. Looking back over the past year, I can definitely see how God brought us through the time apart and brought us closer to Him and each other. What a comfort to know that during tough trials & hard times that "God works ALL things together for good for those that love Him." The time we had apart was time separated, but definitely not time wasted...

Reunited- Stan's R&R

I always have a hard time expressing myself in big moments. That's why I prefer to write letters, so I can let others know how I feel and not let my emotions get the best of me. I wrote Stan a letter to read on the plane when he left here, and for his leave I mailed him a letter to read on the plane ride home. I knew in the airport I would be an emotional mess and not able to express my feelings. Below is the letter I wrote. (I deleted some of it, but I wanted to share the rest.) The feeling of excitement, relief and overwhelming joy felt when being reunited with your spouse after 10 months is really indescribable.

Dear Stan,

Well, we did it! Not only have we made it to your leave, but we've made it to the 10 month mark! I never thought this day would come, but the Lord was faithful and deserves all the glory. He has brought us to this point and has grown our love for Him and each other to levels I never imagined.

I have planned your R&R with you in mind. I want it to be a vacation, where you can truly relax and get away from your job. We'll have plenty of time to enjoy quality time together, home-cooked meals, lazy mornings, trips the beach, vacation to TN, or whatever else you want. You also have many surprises planned...but you'll have to discover those as they come.

I want you to know the past 10 months have been difficult; BUT I can't think of anything else I would rather have done than hold down the homefront for you and wait for your return. You make me proud to go on this journey, and even with the deployment, marrying you was the best decision I ever made. It's been over 300 days since I saw you last, and this day is one of the happiest days of my life thus far, because I get to be reunited with my best friend. I will probably be crying in the airport when you see me due to my happiness. I can't wait to go home and enjoy 2 weeks together making up for lost time.

I love you so much. Try to get some rest on the plan ride. See you very soon!

Love, Kathryn

Stan's still home on leave, and we're enjoying every minute being together! I'll update everyone on our time together over the past few weeks once he's gone.

Letter from Home

I mentioned in the last post about a letter I handed to Stan when he left for Iraq. I knew when saying goodbye I wouldn't be able to say what I wanted, and the letter allowed him to know what I was thinking in that final moment.

Dear Stan

I wanted you to have something special on the plane from me. I thought about giving you a little gift, but I know you’re a simple man and nothing is more special to you than a letter.

There’s so much I want to say to you, but I don’t even know where to begin. I should start by telling you that 7 years ago when the Lord brought you into my path was the day my life changed forever. Little did we know, He had everything already planned and knew we would have this journey in life together. I want you to know that the days I’ve spent with you have been the best days of my life…from our young high school days, to the college years, to the crazy months prior to our wedding, to the Oklahoma days, and now the Georgia years. I never could have visioned how amazing my life with you would be with you in it.

I’ll think about you every day while you’re away. Don’t think a day will go by that I will not think of your smiling face, your sweet touch, your funny jokes, or your comments where you tease me. Not only will I think of you, but I promise to pray for you every day. I’ll pray for your safety, your spiritual life, your relationship with co-workers, your temptations, your happiness, and our marriage.

Because I know you so well, you probably have many thoughts running through your head right now when thinking about the upcoming months. Most of your thoughts are worries, fears, and the anticipation of the unknown. I want you to relax and know you will be alright. You have a wife who will be praying and supporting you. You also have a family back home, and a church family here who is doing the same. You have a wonderful support system the Lord has blessed you with.

A part of me is scared about what the next year will hold, but I know the Lord has it planned already and I’m trusting in His great wisdom. I love you, Stan, and I’m going to continue to keep the promise I made to you on our wedding day when we said our vows. This year will hold some tough times for us, but I’m holding on. Nothing will separate my love...not even the distance around the world or the length of a year. Like the pastor said when handing us our rings, love is like a circle showing no beginning and no end.

Put your trust in the Lord and He will guide you. And get home to me soon, so we can start our family together. :)

Yours forever, Kathryn

Depature Day

We both knew the day would arrive when Stan would have to leave for a deployment. This was not a surprise, and we've been preparing for this day literally for years. Looking back a few years ago, deployment seemed like a distant dream; but soon the distant dream became reality and it has finally arrived. To be honest, we handled the day better than I had ever expected. It wasn't easy, but I know God prepared us mentally, emotional, and spiritually for this day. I can't give the credit to anything else.

The day of his departure was a long day. He was set to leave that night around midnight, so we had the entire day before having to say goodbye. We used the day wisely accomplishing things around the house along with getting in the final dose of quality time together. We acted like the day was a regular, mundane day; but as night approached and the daylight turned dark nether of us said much. We knew what was coming. All too quickly the time came to load the car and we made the drive out to post. I had not cried until this point (I told Stan I would be strong for him) but once we were in the parking lot and the car turned off, I couldn't hold back the tears. He got out of the car, put on this gear, and we said our goodbyes. He told me not to worry, to take of myself, he loved me, and he would call as much as possible. All I could manage to say was I love you, and I handed him a letter I had written. And, that was it. Stan walked away ready to do his job he's been trained to do, and I drove away ready to do my job as his wife.

A couple hours later he called and said the plane was broken, and I had to pick him up. We did round #2 the next night. What an interesting 24 hours we had! It was a roller-coaster of emotions. All of this the past couple days reminded me again that life is tough, and we aren't promised an easy time; but we are promised if we call on the Lord, He will give us strength to endure the tough times. We both know He will be our source of strength.

I'll try to keep everyone posted as I hear from him. He probably wont get to Kuwait until early Sunday morning with the 16 hour flight and the 7 hour time difference.

My Master's Diploma!

Guess what I found in the mail when I came home today? My diploma for my Master's degree!!! What an awesome surprise and great feeling is was to open the envelop and see this with my name on it. All the hard work and two years of studying made it all worth it!

I appreciate Stan for always encouraging me to pursue my dream. Despite the many days I would cry at the table and want to give up, he always encouraged and told me to keep going.

2 Year Anniversary

We reached our 2 year Anniversary last week! Since Stan would be away this month we celebrated before he left. As the date of our Anniversary approached and I had not heard from him in about 5 days, I was surprised to receive a voice mail from him. It was a brief message, but he managed to make me feel special and reminded me he would never forget our wedding day.

I made a video with some pictures of our 2nd year of marriage. When looking through them, I realized how easy this year was compared to our first year. We actually lived in one state and did not have to move any! This year we finally were able to settle into a permanent location and were able to enjoy many weekend trips together along with our vacation over the summer. Even though our third year of marriage will mostly be spent apart, I'm blessed to have spent two years with Stan enjoying our journey through life together. I thank God often for allowing us to spend 2 years together before a deployment.

NTC update: I've heard from Stan a couple times in the past few weeks. He seems to be doing well. I haven't gotten details on what he's doing or how training is going since usually it's brief when we speak. All I've heard is it's hot, he's learning, he's hungry and ready to get home!

Medical Internship

Today was my first day working at the hospital as a Speech Therapy intern. It's my final step before getting my Master's degree this summer. My internship is at the hospital located right outside the army post here. The only reason I dread it is having to wear the yucky scrubs!

My first day was definitely exhausting (I start rounds 7:00am and my last apt. is at 5:00), but I can honestly say I loved every minute of it! I see a wide variety of patients- anywhere from Autistic children, to Traumatic Brain Injuries, to Stroke patients. One patient of mine is a soldier who was wounded in Iraq with a brain injury. It is an absolute honor to work with this young man. I feel helping him is the least I can do as an American citizen considering he willingly served our country.

I'm not exactly sure if the medical setting is where the Lord is leading me to work now or in the future, but so far I'm just enjoying the summer gaining the experience. I hope the Lord can use me to make a difference this summer while working with these patients.

The Power of Prayer

Yesterday was our 7 year Anniversary of our first date from high school. Wow, it sure doesn't feel that long ago, yet when I look back at pictures it looks that long ago! We were young, immature high schoolers just simply dating because we found a friend in each other. Stan claims he knew I was "the one" back then, but I didn't know until later on in college.

THEN- high school

NOW-

My mom shared with me the other night that when I changed schools in 11th grade and went to Oakwood Christian School, she prayed I would find a sweet, Christian guy to date. She wrote the date of her prayer in her bible and it was in September 2001. The following month is when we met and had our first date...and the rest is history.

It's amazing how the Lord answers our prayers and not only answers them but so perfectly beyond our comprehension. I read The Power of a Praying Wife last year in a bible study at our old church in Oklahoma. This book not only changed our marriage but taught me about the power of prayer. I refer to this book weekly and it is continuing to change my prayer life. After thinking back this week to 7 years ago, when my mom prayed for me and 1 month later I met Stan, it confirms my thoughts even more on the power of prayer.

Anniversary

It's hard to believe our Anniversary is here! It seems like yesterday we were married in Anderson and were anxious to hear where the army would be sending us. Little did we know we would be heading to Oklahoma and then back to the South on the coast! Sometimes when I think about what all we've done this past year it seems much longer!....we've lived in 3 different states (SC, OK & GA) in 3 different houses- wow! Even though we've had many moves and adjustments in our lives this year, I'm thankful the Lord gave it to us and allowed us to spend it together. Next year he will be gone on our Anniversary, so we wanted to make this year special.

DINNER CRUISE ON THE SAVANNAH RIVER-- Saturday, he made reservations for us to take a dinner cruise on the Savannah River. It was a neat little boat experience! It had excellent food and gave a spectacular view of the city and river.

TRIP TO JEKYLL ISLAND-- He took a pass for Monday so we decided to head down to Jekyll Island for the day! We enjoyed relaxing on the beach. It was very peaceful and there were only a few other people on the beach near us. One time while in the water, I told him I thought I saw something behind him... And sure enough as we were leaving someone in the water yelled- SHARK! We all spotted a shark in the water about 10 yards from the coast. I'm glad he wasn't hungry! Our day ended with swinging by Crystal (his favorite fast food!) to pick up hamburgers. It was a beautiful day with perfect weather.

EATING CAKE-- We ate the rest of our wedding cake later that evening. We didn't realize it was red velvet until we opened it and it sure was delicious!! Can you tell he got a little too much sun at the beach in these pictures?! He said he was hungry and could have eaten the entire cake...
